First Impressions
Walking into DoubleTree by Hilton New York Times Square South, you’re immediately struck by how they’ve managed to create a sense of calm in one of the city’s most chaotic neighborhoods. The lobby feels surprisingly spacious for a four-star hotel in this part of New York, and honestly, that warm chocolate chip cookie they hand you at check-in never gets old — it’s become sort of a trademark, but it genuinely sets a welcoming tone after navigating the madness outside.
The Location Sweet Spot
Here’s what I love about this spot on 8th Avenue — you’re literally in Hell’s Kitchen, which means you get that authentic New York energy without being right in the tourist crush of Times Square proper. You can walk to all the Broadway shows in about five minutes, but when you want decent food that won’t cost you a fortune, you’ve got amazing local spots like Joe Allen or The Marshal just blocks away. The subway access is actually fantastic too — you’ve got the A, C, and E trains at 42nd Street-Port Authority, plus the N, Q, R, W, S, and 7 at Times Square, so getting anywhere in the city is pretty straightforward.
The Room Experience
The rooms here are what I’d call “New York practical” — they’re not huge, but they’re thoughtfully designed so you don’t feel cramped. Each room has those floor-to-ceiling windows that actually open (rare in the city), and if you’re lucky enough to get a higher floor, the views are pretty spectacular. The beds are genuinely comfortable, which matters when you’ve been walking around the city all day, and the bathrooms are modern with good water pressure — trust me, after a long day of sightseeing, that hot shower hits different.
Pet-Friendly Perks
What really impressed me about this place is how genuinely welcoming they are to pets — and I mean beyond just allowing them. The staff actually seems to enjoy having furry guests around, and they’ll point you toward the nearby DeWitt Clinton Park, which is perfect for dog walks and has a decent off-leash area. Hell’s Kitchen has become surprisingly dog-friendly over the years, with plenty of pet stores and even some restaurant patios that welcome well-behaved pups. The hotel doesn’t charge those ridiculous pet fees that some places do, which honestly makes a huge difference when you’re already paying New York prices for everything else.
Why Guests Love It
You know what sets this place apart? It’s that they’ve figured out how to be professional without being stuffy, and convenient without being generic. The 24-hour fitness center is actually usable (not just a treadmill in a closet), and there’s a business center if you need to print boarding passes or handle work stuff. The parking situation is typical for Manhattan — expensive but available if you really need it, though honestly, you’re better off using the subway from here. Couples seem to particularly love this spot because it strikes that perfect balance between being in the thick of things but still having a peaceful retreat to come back to at the end of the day.
