Freehand New York
First Impressions
Walking into Freehand New York on Lexington Avenue, you immediately get that this isn’t your typical four-star hotel. The lobby has this cool, laid-back vibe that somehow manages to feel both trendy and welcoming — think exposed brick meets modern design without trying too hard. I mean, you’re right in Gramercy, which honestly might be one of the best neighborhoods to stay in if you want that perfect balance of Manhattan energy without the Times Square chaos.
Location & Neighborhood
The location here is actually incredible, and I’m not just saying that because the ratings back it up. You’re a quick walk to Union Square, which means easy subway access to literally anywhere in the city. But here’s what I really love — Gramercy Park is right there, and while you can’t get into the actual park unless you’re a keyholder, the whole area has this quieter, more residential feel that’s perfect after a long day of sightseeing. Plus, you’ve got some fantastic local spots nearby that tourists don’t always discover.
The Room Experience
Now, the room situation at Freehand is interesting — they offer both private rooms and shared accommodations, which gives you options depending on your budget and travel style. The private rooms are compact but smartly designed, and honestly, when you’re spending most of your time exploring New York, you don’t need a massive space. What you do need is a comfortable bed and a clean, functional setup, and they deliver on that. The shared spaces, if you go that route, are actually pretty social and well-maintained.
Dining & Social Scene
The restaurant and bar area downstairs is where this place really shines. It’s got this communal energy that works whether you’re traveling solo or with someone special — and speaking of couples, they absolutely love this location (I can see why, given how romantic some of those Gramercy streets are in the evening). The food is solid, nothing groundbreaking, but the atmosphere makes up for it. You know what’s nice? You can actually have a conversation without shouting over music.
Why Guests Love It
Here’s the thing about Freehand — it gets the balance right between being social and giving you space when you need it. Pet owners will appreciate that they’re welcoming to furry companions, which isn’t always easy to find in Manhattan hotels. The staff seems to genuinely care about making sure you have what you need, and there’s something refreshing about a place that doesn’t take itself too seriously while still maintaining quality standards. For the price point and location, it’s honestly hard to beat, especially if you want to feel like you’re staying somewhere with personality rather than just another corporate hotel.

We booked the Queen studio, which was really quite spacious for New York standards. Since we travelled with a toddler, the receptionist gave us a quiet room far away from the elevator that was indeed relatively quiet, no noise from the street or downstairs partying (the only noise came from the loud airconditioning). It was nice that the room had...

The hotel was clean, and smelled pleasant when you walked into the lobby. The hallways are a bit drab, and could use a bit more artistic touch, like color or murals to liven it up. Even paint the doors differently! Bathroom was nice, cool tile on floor and shower stall, with a cute black and white checkered curtain. Towels were fine, and shower...
